COMPTON

"COMPTON, (or Compton Parva), a parish in the hundred of Compton, in the county of Berks, 2 miles E. of East Ilsley, and 6 from the Goring station of the Great Western railway. The village lies in a hollow or valley under Compton Down, hence its name. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Oxford, of the value of £270, in the patronage of J. P. Wasey, Esq. The church is an ancient Norman structure. The Primitive Methodists have a chapel.
